In the Hindu tradition in India and Nepal, the widely used ancient calendar is Vikrama Samvat or Vikrama's era. This is said to have been started by the legendary Indian emperor Vikramaditya following his victory over the Sakas in 56 BC. Nowadays Bikram Samwat (Bikram Sambat, or Vikram Samvat, abbreviated "B.S." or "V.S.") is the popularly used calendar in India and still the official calendar of Nepal.
