Bikram Samwat (Nepal Dates)

In the Hindu tradition in India and Nepal, the widely used ancient calendar is Vikrama Samvat or Vikrama's era. This is said to have been started by the legendary Indian emperor Vikramaditya following his victory over the Sakas in 56 BC. Nowadays Bikram Samwat (Bikram Sambat, or Vikram Samvat, abbreviated "B.S." or "V.S.") is the popularly used calendar in India and still the official calendar of Nepal.

Conversion rules

Nepali Calendar is based on Bikram Sambat (B.S.) - बिक्रम संवत - and is approximately 56 years 8 months ahead of A.D. The number of days in a month varies from month to month and may not be the same in different years.

Nepal has a unique Time Zone. Nepal Standard Time is 5 hours and 45 minutes ahead of GMT. There are no other countries in the world which has a time zone difference increment of 15 minutes (most are in hours and a few have half an hour).

Notes

In addition to Bikram Samwat, the Gregorian calendar and the original Nepalese calendar, Nepal Sambat, are also used in Nepal. Nepal Sambat was officially used in Nepal till the era of Chandra Shamsher.
